Maire McCarthy will most likely to be  your first point of contact at the clinic. The physiotherapists may make you better, but Maire runs the show.

She'll always greet you with a smile, and do everything she can to make you feel welcome in the clinic. Maire is extremely helpful and will ensure that any queries you may have are adequately followed up (in other words she'll keep after the rest of us until we do the job)

Just give Maire a call on 056 7752258 if you have any queries or want to make an appointment.

Vincent Dunphy joined the staff in 2010. He is the Practice Manager and is responsible for the computerisation of the clinic records.

He also works at the reception desk and helps with the day to day running of the clinic.

As his first love is hurling he is in tune with most of the clients in Kilkenny. He is a keen swimmer, and as he was a lorry driver in a former life he has had his share of back issues so is sympathetic to our clients.

If you have any concerns relating to the clinic you can call Vincent and he will help to sort them for you.

Vincent also does all the accounts and invoicing, so if you have any concerns in that regard, just talk to him.

 PHYSIOTHERAPISTS IN THE CLINIC

Theresa McGinn comes from Co. Tyrone. She qualified from University of Ulster with a BSc Honours degree in Physiotherapy in 1986.

She has worked in hospitals in Galway, Tyrone, Cork, Kilkenny and Carlow. Whilst working in the public system she also worked in private clinics in Cork and Derry.

In Cork Theresa specialised in Neurology and Neurosurgery which gave her an excellent background into movement analysis; and created in her an acute awareness of abnormal movement patterns and how to approach them, this is an excellent basis for treating all sports injuries and musculo-skeletal problems.

On arrival in Kilkenny in February 1994 she commenced work in the O'Neill centre but was only in the city 2 months when the Co. GAA approached her to work with the County hurling and Football teams; and hence was born Kilkenny Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic. The clinic grew rapidly and in November 1996 Theresa reluctantly had to leave the O'Neill centre and work full-time in the clinic.

Theresa remained as sole physiotherapist in charge of all the KilIlkenny County teams until 2000 when family committments overtook her and she reluctantly gave up the Senior team. She kept on all other teams until 2005. Theresa now only looks after the Minor Hurling and Football teams where the level of Physiotherapy input has prevented any player from missing an inter county match through groin or hamstring for many years.

She has undergone intensive post-graduate training in many areas. click here for more information.

Theresa loves all areas of physiotherapy but has drifted towards injury prevention through biomechanical assessments and analysis of movement, enabling her to accurately determine the root of the problem and treat accordingly. She especially enjoys treating children and teenagers with a view to injury  prevention.

Theresa is also a qualified pilates instructor and uses this approach to treatment in a lot of cases, as well as giving classes in the Core Clinic, Clontubrid near Freshford in North Kilkenny.

Marie Corcoran

Marie joined the clinic in January 2011 when she moved down from Dublin. She qualified from University College Dublin in 1999 with a first class Honours Degree in Physiotherapy.

She began her career working in a Rheumatolgy Rehabilitation Unit in Dublin where she gained invaluable experience working with people with chronic arthritis and rheumatoid conditions.
From there Marie began work in St James Hospital,Dublin (2002-2008) where she gained broad hospital experience dealing with all aspects of acute hospital care, but she later specialised in Hand Therapy and Musculoskelal Outpatients.

During this time Marie also worked in Private Practice, widening her skills in treating acute sports injuries as well as a general musculo-skeletal case load.
Since 2008 Marie has worked in the recently established Primary Care setting, again mainly in the management of musculoskelatal conditions.
Marie has attended many post graduate courses to expand and develop her knowlege and skills which include Certificate in Spinal Manual Therapy and Pilates Instructor Training. For further information on Marie's post graduate training
Marie has a special interest in Spinal rehabiliation, Hand injury rehabiliation and Arthritis Management.

As she is a mother of 3 very young children Marie has a great way with Children and has become very actively involved in our progressive paediatric service. Marie is competent in the assessment, treatment and management of children with musculo skeletal issues and along with Theresa McGinn and Sabrina Dunne she does biomechanical assessments and prescribes orthotics within the clinic.

Since coming to Kilkenny Marie has also done her Deep Dry Needling courses.

I suppose her only downside is that she is a Tipperary Woman, but we're trying to convert her.

Maria Walsh

Maria is originally from Wexford and joined the staff at Kilkenny Physiotherapy clinic in 2009.

Like many good physiotherapists Maria took a round about way to get to where she is today. She qualified as an Orthopaedic Sports Massage and Remedial Therapist in 2002 and from this was further inspired to increase her knowledge and skills and went on to complete her BSc (Hons) Degree in Sport Science and MSc in Physiotherapy in the UK.

During her studies Maria gained invaluable clinical experience in the areas of musculoskeletal, neurology, cardiorespiratory, paediatrics, care of the elderly and women’s health.

Since returning to Ireland in 2009 Maria has been involved in providing physiotherapy treatment to GAA clubs both in Wexford (but we wont hold that against her) and Kilkenny. She looked after the Waterford ladies Football team who made it to an All Ireland final in Croke Park in September 2010, and she has been heavily involved with the FIA at an underage level.

In the last 2 years Maria has been involved with the kilkenny minor hurling and football teams, and attends many matches in a professional capacity.

Maria divides her time between Kilkenny Physiotherapy & Sports Injury clinic and a physiotherapy clinic in Waterford.

Since starting here in September 2009 Maria has played an active part in the team, promoting our back classes, participating in inservice training and carrying out post graduate training. For more information click here

Maria is one of our main Deep Dry Needling Specialists in the clinic having completed her training in the Travell and Simons method of deep dry needling. She has taken a keen interest in shoulder injuries.

Maria worked in nursing homes for a number of years and is very sympathetic towards the elderly providing them with age appropriate physiotherapy for all conditions.

Although originally from Wexford Maria has moved to live in Kilkenny and so hopefully her loyalties in the GAA will move too. She is a keen cyclist and is acutely aware of the effects of prolonged exercise.

Colette McDonald

Colette is a fully qualified Chartered Physiotherapist with a broad range of experience having worked in the health service for several years where she worked in the Community in the Kilkenny and Carlow areas.  Naturally in this field she became experienced in a huge range of fields.

Colette resigned from the health board in 2009 and now devotes her time to private practice in Carlow during the day, and still comes to our clinic when required.

Colette provides accupuncture for our clients in the clinic. She has trained extensively in the area of Chinese Accupuncture, and did much of her study in the East. She also uses Western based techniques and her treatments are based on scientific research. The fact that Colette is primarily a physiotherapist is a huge asset in this field as she has a fantastic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body and is able to incorporate her physiotherapy assessment, treatment skills and exercise prescription into her accupuncture sessions.

As Colette is from Carlow we dont hold her as a huge threat in the hurling field, but we are wary as young Carlow teams are becoming more competitive.

Lucy Gubbins

Lucy has been working in the clinic since early 2010. Lucy was a mature student when she did her degree in  physiotherapy having previously completed a degree in engineering. This change in professions is healthy as it is a transference of understanding mechanics in engineering to understanding the mechanics of the human body, and indeed mind.

As a student lucy showed her enthusiasm by spending umpteen hours observing clinical practice in our clinic, and when she originally qualified she worked in Auteven hospital where she gained invaluable experience on the wards in post surgical physiotherapy as well as in musculo-skeletal outpatients.

Lucy attends our ongoing inservice training sessions where all therapists are educated in, and practice, up to date and new treatment methods.

Lucy has completed her Stotts Pilates training and is now teaching classes in Kilkenny Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic as well as using these techniques effectively in her treatments. Lucy is pioneering our Pre and Post Natal Pilates Programme in the clinic. She also runs our back class programme.

Lucy is in to cycling and running and has completed a few marathons in her time. She enjoys exercise and teaching exercise classes, and through this experience she has an empathy with injured sports people and appreciates their need for a speedy recovery.

Majella Delaney

Majella is our most recent addition to the staff. She began working with us in January 2011. She did her training in Hertfordshire having previously completed a BSc in Science & Physiology in Sligo, having achieved a 1st Class Honours degree.

Majella gained much of her physiotherapy experience in Bedfordshire, Barnett's Hospital and North Finchley in London.

Since commencing work in Kilkenny Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, Majella has been 100% dedicated to advancing her professional advancement and developing her clinical skills. She has spent every available free minute shadowing and assisting senior members of staff and gaining on the ground experience which can not be achieved through post graduate training.

Majella attends all of our weekly in-service training sessions. She has been involved in our back care programme, in player screening programmes and core stability training with sports clubs, including the Kilkenny County Minor Hurling Team.

Majella attends matches for many clubs in the area doing physiotherapy and helping with warm up and cool down sessions.

Majella has been studying biomechanics and intends to further her skills in orthotic prescription by attending courses in winter 2011.

She herself is a runner, having won many trophies through her adolescent years and as such has a great understanding of the stresses and strains on the modern sports person, and imparticular athletes.

Unfortunately she had a very vocal appreciation of the achievements of Tipperary County Hurling team since 2010, but was dignified in defeat in 2011.
